Miami race promoter Ralph Sanchez starts planning a permanent track in 1991 for his Grand Prix of Miami and, courted by Homestead officials after Hurricane Andrew, builds Homestead Miami Speedway, which opens on 3 November 1995. Wayne Huizenga lends $20 million to cover the track's deficits for a minority stake. The year given is the start of the speedway project.
