Keys Gate grows out of the 1970s Villages of Homestead Development of Regional Impact in southeast Homestead. The Keys Gate Golf Club opens in 1990 at 2300 SE Palm Drive and the main infrastructure is built in the 1980s by a developer reported as a Canadian company. By 2013 the community holds thirteen subdivisions and more than 3,000 homes under one association. The golf course closes on 9 October 2014 and its land becomes the Keys Gate III site.
