Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway reaches Homestead in 1904 and continues as the Overseas Railroad to Key West in 1912. The Labor Day hurricane of 1935 destroys the Keys line, and the roadbed south of Florida City is sold to the state for the Overseas Highway. By 1989 the main line from Kendall to Florida City is abandoned; the state buys the right of way in 1988 and it becomes the South Miami-Dade Busway in 1997.
