The South Miami-Dade Busway opens on 3 February 1997 on 8.2 miles of former Florida East Coast Railway right of way beside US 1 from Dadeland South to Cutler Ridge Mall. It reaches SW 264th Street on 24 April 2005 and SW 344th Street in Florida City on 16 December 2007, about 20 miles in all. Between 2021 and 2025 the corridor is rebuilt with 14 new bus rapid transit stations, crossing gates and signal priority, and Metro Express BRT service begins on 27 October 2025.
