The original Overseas Highway route leaves US 1 in Florida City and crosses Card Sound on a 2,800 foot wooden bridge opened on 25 January 1928. The drawbridge is removed in the late 1940s and the present high level causeway opens in 1969. Designated County Road 905A, it charges an electronic toll from 20 October 2018 and serves as the second way out of the Keys.
