Krome Avenue is named for William J. Krome, the Florida East Coast Railway engineer who mapped the Everglades and led the Key West extension. The state designates it State Road 27 in 1945 and renumbers it SR 997 in 1983; it runs 36.7 miles from Homestead to US 27. Its southern end passes through downtown Homestead, where it is the main street of the historic district.
