Construction starts in July 1971; the first 13 miles open on 1 May 1973 and the road is continuous from Miramar to Homestead by 20 May 1974, with the final section to US 1 in Florida City later in 1974. The roughly 48 mile toll road has South Dade exits at Campbell Drive, Biscayne Drive and Speedway Boulevard and converted to all electronic tolling in 2011.
