The Florida Department of Transportation builds the busway on the abandoned FEC right of way after the state buys the corridor in 1988. Phase one, 8.2 miles with 15 stops each direction and an 8 foot bike path, opens in February 1997 at a reported cost of about $59.9 million. Weekday ridership exceeds 12,000 by 2001. Phase two extends it 11.5 miles to Florida City in 2005 and 2007. The county later rebrands the corridor the South Dade TransitWay.
