Miami-Dade voters approve a half cent charter county transportation surtax on 5 November 2002, with the Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust created to oversee it. The plan promises more buses, expanded rapid transit and, for South Dade, a Metrorail extension along the busway corridor that is later replaced by bus rapid transit. Surtax funds supply $100 million of the South Corridor BRT project and pay for municipal circulators such as the Homestead Trolley and Palmetto Bay IBus.
