James Sottile donates the land in 1937 and 1938 and the park is dedicated in 1939 with a WPA built atoll pool and dockage. It serves as a crash boat base for the Homestead air field in the Second World War and is rededicated in 1955; a second, segregated atoll beach on the north side later becomes camping and boat launching. The park covers 1,200 acres with 90 open to the public beside Biscayne National Park headquarters at Convoy Point.
