The county zoo moves from Crandon Park on Key Biscayne to the former Naval Air Station Richmond, opening a preview of 12 exhibits as Miami MetroZoo on 4 July 1980 and its first full section, Asia, on 12 December 1981. Hurricane Andrew topples more than 5,000 trees and destroys the Wings of Asia aviary in 1992; five animals die and the zoo reopens on 18 December 1992. It is renamed Zoo Miami on 4 July 2010 and holds more than 3,000 animals on about 750 acres.
