The county dedicates the 270 acre park on 17 December 1977 on former Naval Air Station Richmond land for Miami Herald columnist Larry Thompson, who died in 1973, and his wife Penny, an aviator. It has a 22 acre lake with beach, 240 RV sites, tent camping and horse and bike trails, and a concrete directional arrow from the blimp base survives at the south entrance.
