The C-111 canal carries flood water from western Miami-Dade past Florida City into northeast Florida Bay, drawing fresh water away from coastal wetlands and altering salinity in both national parks. The CERP project proposes filling the southern reach and replacing it with an east west spreader canal to release water across the wetlands near Taylor Slough while keeping flood protection for farms. The project is part of the 2000 plan.
