Biscayne National Monument is created on 18 October 1968 after residents and Congressman Dante Fascell defeat the Seadade refinery port and the Islandia resort city, and Congress makes it a national park on 28 June 1980. It covers 172,971 acres, of which 9,075 are land, with headquarters at Convoy Point east of Homestead. Hurricane Andrew crosses the park on 24 August 1992 with a 17 foot surge; the Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Convoy Point is the mainland visitor building and is named for Fascell by Congress in 1998.
