Congress authorises the park in May 1934 after a campaign led by Ernest Coe and President Truman dedicates it on 6 December 1947 at Everglades City; it covers about 1.5 million acres. The main entrance on State Road 9336 west of Homestead and Florida City leads to Royal Palm and the Anhinga Trail. Hurricane Andrew destroys the original main visitor centre in 1992 and the replacement Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center is dedicated in December 1996 and named by Congress in 1997.
