Chapman Field serves as an army airfield in 1917, the Department of Agriculture starts its plant introduction garden there in 1923 and the War Department declares the land surplus in 1947. Miami-Dade County acquires the 483 acre parcel and creates the park in 1949 at 13601 Old Cutler Road, builds three lighted baseball fields with Decade of Progress bonds in 1972 and closes the ball fields in 2014 over arsenic contamination. About 51 acres are developed and 432 acres are mangrove; a canoe and kayak ramp remains open.
