A wooden drawbridge opens on 25 January 1928 and is removed by 1947 after hurricane and fire damage; the present causeway opens in 1969. Card Sound Road runs from US 1 in Florida City to County Road 905 in north Key Largo as one of two road links to the Keys, carrying about 3,500 vehicles a day in 2016. The toll is waived during Keys evacuations.
