Opens on 16 September 1942 as Homestead Army Air Field and reopens as Homestead Air Force Base in February 1955 (Wikipedia gives 1 February, the base history gives 8 February). Hurricane Andrew destroys most of the base in August 1992 and the Air Force reopens it in March 1994 as a reserve installation under the 482nd Fighter Wing, redesignated Homestead Air Reserve Station on 1 April 1994 and Homestead Air Reserve Base on 17 December 2003. The 1995 base closure round removes it from the closure list on 22 June 1995 after local lobbying. The base reports about 3,000 personnel and a $364 million local economic impact for fiscal 2023.
