The Urban Development Boundary first appears on the 1975 land use map of the county's Comprehensive Development Master Plan and is formally incorporated in the CDMP in 1983. It limits urban development in the western and southern county and keeps most Redland farmland outside the line; in 2025 the Property Appraiser classes 48,867 acres of farmland outside the UDB and 3,684 acres inside it. Moving the line requires a supermajority of the county commission and the South Dade Logistics and Technology District vote in 2022 is the most contested recent case.
