Jose Costa Sr. founds Costa Farms in 1961 on 30 acres growing tomatoes and calamondins, and the company switches to foliage plants in 1965 and begins supplying Kmart in 1980. Hurricane Andrew devastates the nurseries in 1992 and the third generation of the family rebuilds. Headquartered at 21800 SW 162nd Avenue, it joins Markel Ventures in 2017 and describes itself as one of the largest houseplant growers in the world.
