Edward Leedskalnin begins carving his oolitic limestone structures in Florida City around 1923 and from 1936 spends three years moving them ten miles north to the present site on South Dixie Highway, working until 1951. About 1,100 tons of stone stand without mortar. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 as Rock Gate and operates as a paid attraction at 28655 S Dixie Highway.
