Mary Calkins Heinlein (1903 to 1975) comes from a pioneer Redland farming family and conceives the Fruit and Spice Park as a showcase of the area's agriculture. She serves as its first superintendent from 1944 until her retirement in 1959, developing the gardens with her husband Herman to a plan by landscape architect William Lyman Phillips.
