S. Howard Richmond builds the Richmond Cottage at Cutler as his family home in 1896 and converts it into a 22 room hotel completed in 1900, then described as the most southerly hotel on the United States mainland. Charles Deering buys the inn in 1916 and it becomes part of the Deering Estate.
