Dr Henry Perrine, born in 1797 and United States consul at Campeche, receives a 36 square mile township grant from Congress in 1838 to introduce tropical plants. He waits out the Second Seminole War at Indian Key and is killed there in the raid of 7 August 1840. His widow has the grant moved to the Biscayne Bay shore and it becomes the Perrine Grant.
