After Hurricane Andrew wrecks Homestead Air Force Base in 1992 the Air Force completes a reuse environmental impact statement in 1994 and Miami-Dade County gives Homestead Air Base Developers Inc an exclusive lease in 1996 to build a commercial airport. Environmental groups win a supplemental review and on 16 January 2001 the Air Force's Record of Decision rejects the airport in favour of mixed commercial and residential use; the county drops its suit in December 2001.
