Charlie Brooks and his son Dick begin growing in the Redland in the early 1900s and in 1928 Dick Brooks ships refrigerated avocados to New York, the date the company treats as its start in the national trade. Pal Brooks enters the business in the 1960s and leads it today. A packing house fire in 1988 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992 both force rebuilding. The company markets SlimCado avocados, Caribbean Red papaya, starfruit and about twenty other tropical crops from South Dade, the Florida west coast and Latin America.
