Florida Power and Light opens oil and gas units 1 and 2 in April 1967 and April 1968 and nuclear units 3 and 4 in December 1972 and September 1973 on a 3,300 acre site south of Homestead. Hurricane Andrew hits the plant directly in August 1992, destroying raw water tanks and cracking a smokestack without damaging the nuclear containments. Unit 5, a gas combined cycle plant, opens in 2007 and the nuclear units hold licenses to 2052 and 2053. FPL reports about 700 direct jobs at the plant.
