After Hurricane Andrew wrecks most of the 2,000 buildings at Homestead Air Force Base in 1992 the Air Force recommends closure. The 1993 Base Realignment and Closure Commission instead keeps the field as an Air Force Reserve installation; fighter units return in March 1994 and the 482nd Fighter Wing takes over as host on 1 April 1994. A plan to hand the runway to Miami-Dade County for a joint civil airport is never carried out and the field is redesignated Homestead Air Reserve Base in December 2003.
