In June 2005 a 75,000 dollar federal grant through the Miami-Dade Defense Alliance and the Beacon Council funds a Joint Land Use Study to prevent encroachment on the 2,200 acre base, with compatible use zones about a mile wide and three miles from the runway ends and a 17 member policy committee. The county Commission Auditor follows in September 2020 with a Joint Use Study of civil aviation at the base.
