The category 5 Labor Day hurricane of 1935 washes away more than 40 miles of the Overseas Railroad in the Middle Keys, beyond the Florida East Coast Railway's means to repair. The railroad that made Homestead the mainland gateway to the Keys ends there and the road takes its place.
